Birmingham University

The University of Birmingham

The University has a long history of welcoming students from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds. They were one of the first universities to set up a fair access scheme for local students and we are a partner institution meaning we can offer tailored support towards applications to their Routes to Professions and Access To Birmingham Programmes.

Routes to the Professions

The Routes to Professions (R2P) programme offers a unique opportunity for Y12 students to gain a real insight into university study. It focuses on specific vocational courses and provides students with tailored support through the university application process. Y12 students should apply if they have an interest in learning more about careers in Dentistry, Engineering, Finance, Law or Medicine.  At the heart of the R2P programme is the experience of being mentored by a current student at the University of Birmingham.  Pupils taking part in R2P will be partnered with a University student who is studying a degree related to their R2P academic stream, offering access to tailored advice and support throughout the programme.  During the programme, pupils will engage in activities and receive support from professional and academic staff at the University, and will interact with external professionals, helping to inform their choices about future educational and career pathways.

Access To Birmingham

A successful A2B applicant will receive two offers from the University of Birmingham, the standard offer and a Pathways to Birmingham offer. The Pathways to Birmingham offer is typically a reduction of up to two A level grades (e.g. BBB rather than AAB).

As well as the Pathways to Birmingham offer, students will also benefit from:

  • Continual support and guidance from an experienced and dedicated A2B team
  • Participation in the A2B Module which will prepare students for the transition to university study
  • Practice interviews for particular courses where relevant
  • Financial support
  • The opportunity for students to make new friends before they start at a special induction event
  • Continued support from the experienced and supportive A2B team
Next Steps

Meet with your personal tutor to discuss your aspirations to join the scheme as soon as you arrive to us in Y12. They will then ensure the Head of Sixth Form meets with you to guide you through the application process for Routes to Professions.
